Rosacea
Are you bothered by facial flushing and blushing, persistent facial redness, inflamed pimple-like bumps, or burning and grittiness of the eyes?
If so, you may suffer from Rosacea, an extremely common condition that affects an estimated 14 million Americans. It begins with facial flushing and blushing, and then progresses to persistent facial redness, broken facial blood vessels, and inflamed pimple-like bumps. Severe cases can results in permanent skin thickening of the central face called rhinophyma. Some patients with Rosacea also have an overabundance of oil gland growths called sebaceous hyperplasia.
It is most common in northern European and Celtic skin types. Rosacea is influenced by genetics, excess sun and hot water exposure, spicy foods, alcohol and stress.
While the exact cause of Rosacea is unknown and there is currently no cure, it can be controlled with lifestyle modifications, prescription topical and oral medications, and simple in-office surgical and laser treatments.
